Why Raksha Bandan is celebrated?

Relationships are the essence of celebration and it holds true for any Indian festival. Each festival brings the family together which calls for a total festive environment. Raksha Bandhan is a celebration of one such relation - the relation of a brother and a sister. The relation is no where so celebrated as in India. Raksha Bandhan is a festival which signifies the bond of affection between brothers and sisters. It is a day when the siblings pray for each others' well being and wish for each others' happiness and goodwill.

The name 'Raksha Bandhan' suggests 'a bond of protection'. On this auspicious day, brothers make a promise to their sisters to protect them from all harms and troubles and the sisters pray to God to protect their brother from all evil. The festival falls on the Shravan Purnima which comes generally in the month of August. Sisters tie the silk thread called Rakhi on their brother's wrist and pray for their well being and brothers promise to take care of their sisters.

Raksha Bandhan is now considered as a day to celebrate the sacred relation of a brother and a sister. Yet there have been examples in history where in rakhi has just been a raksha or protection. It could be tied by wife, a daughter or mother. The Rishis tied rakhi to the people who came seeking their blessings.

Nowadays, people tie Rakhi to neighbours and close friends too signifying a peaceful co-existence of every individual. Rakhi Utsav was first popularized by Rabindranath Tagore to promote the feeling of unity and a commitment to all members of society to protect each other and encourage a harmonious Social life.

The festival of Raksha Bandhan assumes all forms of Raksha or protection, of righteousness and destroyer of all sin.

Report on Independence Day Celebration

15th August 2013
Chennai 62
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
67th Independence Day celebrated in Thirumalaivasan Nagar

A special report

Thirumalaivasan nagar is a fast developing residential hub situated near Thirumullaivoyal, Chennai - District:  Thiruvallur.  The layout of this nagar was designed in 2004.  Within a span of  9 years, Thirumalaivasan Nagar, a CMDA approved residential area, has more than 120 houses and many more buildings are under construction.

2.    For ensuring continuous development of this area, an association in the name of Thirumalaivasan Nagar Residents Welfare Association was formed in the year 2005.  Since then the association has been contributing its mite in sorting out the various problems meted out by the residents.  Today, no doubt, there is an immense development.  However, there are still many more main issues pending, such as forming of good road, providing drainage facility etc., which is a cause of worry.  The association is straining every nerve to liaise with the authorities of Avadi Municipality to speed-up the early execution of pending issues.

3.          The association has been celebrating the Independence Day and Republic Day every year ever since its inception.   This year too the day was celebrated in a grand manner.

4.          In spite of the incessant showers, residents gathered near the park, the place of celebration.  At sharp 8 a.m. the national flag was unfurled by Shri S. Madivanan, a retired senior Officer of CVRDE and a member of this association.  After playing the national anthem, the students who had passed 10th and plus two exams were given away with mementos.  This initiative has been taken for the first time in our Nagar. Keeping in mind the necessity to motivate the successful candidates, the committee, after serving the prizes to those present during the occasion, visited the houses of the other  awardees who could not attend the function and handed over the prizes.

4.               Photographs taken during the occasion are under compilation and would be published within a few hours.
