Why Muharram is celebrated?

Muharram (Arabic: محرم) It is the first month of the Islamic calendar. Instead of joyous celebration, Muslims mark the beginning of the New Year by taking up the black attire of sorrow and participate in mourning gatherings in which the sacrifices of Husayn and his companions are commemorated. It is one of the four months of the year in which fighting is prohibited. Since the Islamic calendar is lunar, Muharram moves from year to year when compared with the Gregorian calendar.

Muharram is so called because it was unlawful to fight during this month; the word is derived from the word ‘haram’ meaning forbidden. It is held to be the most sacred of all the months, excluding Ramadan. It is the same month when Husayn, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, was brutally massacred in Karbala alongside his family and friends in the year 680 CE/61 AH.

Their martyrdom is a sad day for all Muslims, especially the Shi’a, who hold mourning ceremonies to recall the righteous virtues for which the valiant martyrs stood and the grave calamities that they thus had to bear. The commemoration of this brutal massacre (Battle of Karbala) begins on the first day of Muharram and reaches its climax on the 10th of Muharram, the day of the battle, known as Ashurah and continues for 40 days or 69 days.

ONAM WISHES / WHY DO WE CELEBRATE ONAM?

എല്ലാവര്‍ക്കും ഹൃദയം നിറഞ്ഞ

ഓണാശംസകള്‍.......... ......

WE WISH YOU ALL A HAPPY ONAM [.]

LET THIS DAY BRING ALL HAPPINESS,

WEALTH AND GOOD HEALTH  TO

YOU AND YOUR FAMILY [.]

Why do we celebrate Onam?

Onam is one of the most significant harvest festivals of Kerala and is an attraction for thousands of people outside and within the State. All the activities during this season are centered on worship, music, dance, sports, boat races and good food. This festival is celebrated in the Malayalam month Chingam (ending of August and beginning of September).
Onam is a harvest festival and celebrates the reward of nature after a year of hard work. The merry-making of the festival includes an elaborate procession of Trichur and amusing boat races on River Pampa. Women dress up in heavy jewellery, new saris and make complex and detailed designs of "rangolis" and "pookkalam"(with flowers) in front of their homes.
Onam is celebrated in the memory of King Mahabali. It was said that King Mahabali ruled Kerala a long time ago and looked after the welfare of the people. Thus Onam shows the blissful rule of the King and the freedom, which the people enjoyed under his rule. The people also believe that during Onam, the King returns to Kerala to pay a visit to his people.
The people in Kerala arrange for this festival by cleaning up their houses and decorating them. On the occasion of Onam, everybody in the family wears new clothes. Delicious sweets and dishes are prepared and served on the banana leaves.
'Pookalam' a flower mat is visible outside every house. This mat is a symbol of welcoming King Mahabali. On the eve of Onam, traditional rituals are performed and the people celebrate the occasion with a grand feast.
'Payasam', a sweet and tempting porridge is one of the favourite desserts served on the eve of Onam. 'Vallamkali' or a great boat race is an attractive feature of this festival. In this game hundreds of men row the boats to the beat of drums and cymbals.
An interesting thing to note is that above each boat there is a scarlet silk umbrella and gold coins are hung from the umbrella. This event is extremely popular with various boats competing with each other in order to win the race.
Not only Hindus but Christians and Muslims also celebrate Onam. It is one such festival that unites all the people regardless of race and religion. The colourful festival of Onam is an attraction for thousands of people within Kerala and outside the State. The State Government itself has taken the initiative to celebrate Onam season as tourist festival with the motive of attracting tourists. Various cultural forms, old and new, are presented in all-important towns in the state during the festival.
In Trichur, a vibrant procession with resplendently caparisoned elephants is taken out. There is magnificent display of fireworks. The temple at Trikkakkara (where the legend of Mahabali is beautifully depicted) is one of the major attractions of the Kerala's festivities.
The Vallamkali (boat race) is one of the main attractions of Onam. Some of the sites famous for these races are Aranmula on the Pamba River in the Kuttanad region, Papiyad near Quilon, and Thayathangadi near Kottayam.
At Shoranur, Kathakali dancers in gorgeous costumes enact the legends. Kovalam hosts a Kathakali and native arts festival and a village fair, with handicrafts and cuisine predominating. A Cheruthuruthy, people gather to watch Kathakali performers enact scenes from epics and folk tales.
Pulikali, also known as Kaduvakali is a common sight during Onam season, performers paint their bodies in bright yellow, red and black spots and lines to resemble tigers, and dance to the loud beats of percussion instruments like udukku and thakil.

Why Raksha Bandan is celebrated?

Relationships are the essence of celebration and it holds true for any Indian festival. Each festival brings the family together which calls for a total festive environment. Raksha Bandhan is a celebration of one such relation - the relation of a brother and a sister. The relation is no where so celebrated as in India. Raksha Bandhan is a festival which signifies the bond of affection between brothers and sisters. It is a day when the siblings pray for each others' well being and wish for each others' happiness and goodwill.

The name 'Raksha Bandhan' suggests 'a bond of protection'. On this auspicious day, brothers make a promise to their sisters to protect them from all harms and troubles and the sisters pray to God to protect their brother from all evil. The festival falls on the Shravan Purnima which comes generally in the month of August. Sisters tie the silk thread called Rakhi on their brother's wrist and pray for their well being and brothers promise to take care of their sisters.

Raksha Bandhan is now considered as a day to celebrate the sacred relation of a brother and a sister. Yet there have been examples in history where in rakhi has just been a raksha or protection. It could be tied by wife, a daughter or mother. The Rishis tied rakhi to the people who came seeking their blessings.

Nowadays, people tie Rakhi to neighbours and close friends too signifying a peaceful co-existence of every individual. Rakhi Utsav was first popularized by Rabindranath Tagore to promote the feeling of unity and a commitment to all members of society to protect each other and encourage a harmonious Social life.

The festival of Raksha Bandhan assumes all forms of Raksha or protection, of righteousness and destroyer of all sin.

Report on Independence Day Celebration

15th August 2013
Chennai 62
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
67th Independence Day celebrated in Thirumalaivasan Nagar

A special report

Thirumalaivasan nagar is a fast developing residential hub situated near Thirumullaivoyal, Chennai - District:  Thiruvallur.  The layout of this nagar was designed in 2004.  Within a span of  9 years, Thirumalaivasan Nagar, a CMDA approved residential area, has more than 120 houses and many more buildings are under construction.

2.    For ensuring continuous development of this area, an association in the name of Thirumalaivasan Nagar Residents Welfare Association was formed in the year 2005.  Since then the association has been contributing its mite in sorting out the various problems meted out by the residents.  Today, no doubt, there is an immense development.  However, there are still many more main issues pending, such as forming of good road, providing drainage facility etc., which is a cause of worry.  The association is straining every nerve to liaise with the authorities of Avadi Municipality to speed-up the early execution of pending issues.

3.          The association has been celebrating the Independence Day and Republic Day every year ever since its inception.   This year too the day was celebrated in a grand manner.

4.          In spite of the incessant showers, residents gathered near the park, the place of celebration.  At sharp 8 a.m. the national flag was unfurled by Shri S. Madivanan, a retired senior Officer of CVRDE and a member of this association.  After playing the national anthem, the students who had passed 10th and plus two exams were given away with mementos.  This initiative has been taken for the first time in our Nagar. Keeping in mind the necessity to motivate the successful candidates, the committee, after serving the prizes to those present during the occasion, visited the houses of the other  awardees who could not attend the function and handed over the prizes.

4.               Photographs taken during the occasion are under compilation and would be published within a few hours.
